Jointed Gouging Carbon Electrode
Jointed Gouging Carbon Electrode
The gouging process removes metal through the intense heat of an arc between a carbon/graphite electrode and a workpiece.jointed gouging carbon electrode The arc melts the metal, and compressed air blows the molten metal from the electrode’s tip to evacuate the area. The technique is suitable for cutting and gouging metals such as carbon steel, stainless steel, high-alloy wear plate and copper alloys. It can even cut through cast irons. Typical applications include back-gouging to reach a weld seam, removing gates and risers from castings and reshaping of equipment prior to welding repair.
The rate of metal removal depends on the diameter of the carbon electrode, output of the power source and skill of the operator. The right carbon electrode, the proper power supply and the correct gouging technique ensure that a consistent amount of melted metal is removed.
A jointed gouging carbon electrode combines the advantages of a plain electrode with a graphite one for maximum metal removal with minimal electrode erosion. The electrodes are made by mixing carbon and graphite with a binder to produce dense, homogeneous, low electrical resistance electrodes. Then, they’re coated with a controlled thickness of copper to minimize electrode erosion and offer stable arc characteristics for a longer life and consistent groove uniformity. The electrodes are available in round, half-round and flat (rectangular) shapes with multiple sizes to accommodate different applications.
To maximize performance, the electrodes are double-dipped in copper for superior arc starting and arc stability. They also use purified carbon to maintain consistency from lot to lot for consistent results every time you use them.
When using a carbon electrode for arc gouging, position the uncoated end toward the workpiece. A swiveling head on the torch holding the electrode makes it easy to adjust the position of the arc. Position it so that the arc is centered on the workpiece, and set the air pressure to 80 to 100 psi to avoid trapping carbon in the gouge.
A specialized insulated connection boot and hookup kit simplifies torch connections to reduce the risk of electrical contact with electrically hot parts and eliminates the need for grounding, which may cause a shock hazard. The rocker switch on the cable assembly controls air flow to prevent a constant current from flowing through the electrode until the operator manually initiates the flow by pressing down on the switch.
